What Is a Transfer of Ownership Document (TOD) in Prince Edward Island?

In Prince Edward Island, a vehicle permit transfer is the process of transferring the ownership of a vehicle from the seller to the buyer. Instead of using a separate Transfer of Ownership document (TOD), the transfer is completed by the seller signing off on the back of the vehicle's registration permit.

How Can One Obtain a Transfer of Ownership Document in Prince Edward Island?

To transfer a vehicle's ownership in Prince Edward Island, the seller must sign and complete the reverse side of the vehicle registration permit. This includes filling out the Notification of Transfer form, which must be sent within seven days of the transfer date to the following address:

Registrar of Motor Vehicles

PO Box 2000

Charlottetown, PEI C1A 7N8

The buyer must also register the vehicle in their name within seven days following the transfer. For this process, the buyer must provide the following documentation:

  • Vehicle permit signed by the previous owner
  • Bill of sale (receipt)
  • Motor vehicle inspection form (either in the current owner's name or the buyer's name)
  • Valid insurance card (often referred to as the pink slip)

Additionally, the tax will be calculated based on the highest value among the Redbook value, the bill of sale, or any appraisal. Comprehensive instructions for this process are included on the back of the registration permit.
